Reminder: Anyone born after December 31, 1979 cannot purchase a license to hunt in Minnesota without first taking a DNR Safety Training Course and receiving a certificate. In addition, many states have even more stringent mandatory Hunter Education requirements. Check before you go!

Reminder: Any resident born after December 31, 1976, who operates a snowmobile in Minnesota must possess a snowmobile certificate. Two options are available to complete certification. Ages 11 and older can take the online course and hands-on day or attend the traditional youth course. Those 16 or older can take the online course.

Reminder: Anyone born after July 1, 1987, who operates an ATV on public lands and waters in Minnesota must successfully complete the ATV Safety Training online course. People under age 16 must complete the ATV online course and riding component before riding on public lands. Please direct questions to 1-800-366-8917 or 1-888-MINNDNR.

SCHEDULED INSTRUCTOR TRAINING SESSIONS

If you are 18 or older and would like to become an instructor for Snowmobile Safety, ATV Safety, Firearms Safety, Trail Ambassador or one of the Advanced Hunter programs, contact your local conservation officer or regional safety training officer. Instructor clinics are scheduled throughout the state and are listed on the DNR website.

STAFF NOTES:
RTO Corey Wiebusch (SE Metro) assisted local officers with a busy 2025 fishing opener. Some fish were seen on the stringer; however, most folks were just enjoying the weather. Some ATV activity was worked around the area as well. Time was spent preparing for an upcoming presentation.

RTO Brett Oberg (SW Metro) worked the 2025 Fishing Opener this past week. The beautiful weather brought out some solid fishing in the area. Several anglers were able to find walleyes and northern pike and few were able to catch a limit. Time was also spent planning safety education classes and working on safety education projects.

RTO Jen Mueller (SW MN) worked during the fishing opener. She checked anglers enjoying the beautiful weather during the fishing opener. Earlier in the week, she attended meetings and worked on various division initiatives.

RTO Dave Schottenbauer (NE MN) took most of his time working on the ELS project. Time was also spent at Camp Ripley for meetings, and clinic preparations.

RTO Joseph Stattelman (NW MN) spent the week working on backgrounds and answering instructor and parent questions. Time was spent checking fishermen in the Detroit Lakes area for fishing opener. RTO meeting was attended.

RTO Amber Ladd (North Metro) continued work on the ELS project and assisted with an honor guard detail.

Recreational Vehicle Coordinator Bruce Lawrence attended the Governor's Fishing Opener in Cross Lake, Minnesota assisting other conservation officers with security and safety for all participants. Other items this week, meetings with parks and trails staff on Off-highway vehicle master plans, meetings with enforcement staff on safety training curriculum and answering questions about ATV operations in roadways and lands not in grant in aid trail routes.
