Trout anglers can find winter fishing opportunities in southeastern Minnesota

Winter trout fishing is another way to enjoy the outdoors along streams that meander through the scenic bluffs and hills of southeastern Minnesota.

Trout fishing is catch-and-release only from Monday, Jan. 1, through Sunday, April 14, at all designated trout streams in Dodge, Fillmore, Goodhue, Houston, Mower, Olmsted, Wabasha and Winona counties. There are additional catch-and-release fishing opportunities all winter in Beaver Creek Valley, Forestville and Whitewater state parks, as well as in the city limits of Chatfield, Lanesboro, Preston, Rushford and Spring Valley.

Southeastern Minnesota trout fishing information is available on the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources website and fishing maps are available on the Lanesboro area fisheries webpage.

Minnesota DNR webinars focus on the northern lights and winter animal tracks

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources invites people interested in wildlife and outdoor skills to check out the winter program schedule for the Minnesota Outdoor Skills and Stewardship Series.

In a webinar on Wednesday, Dec. 27, Jesse Gates, dark sky educator from Voyageurs Conservancy, will discuss the science behind the northern lights and tips on where to see them and Travis Novitsky, photographer and author, will discuss indigenous peoples’ connection to the night sky and photographing the northern lights.

In a webinar on Wednesday, Jan. 3, staff from Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center will discuss the tracks that animals leave behind in the snow, interpreting the tracks and how learning to read tracks can improve a person’s outdoor skills.

The Minnesota Outdoor Skills and Stewardship Series webinars are free and offered year-round, though registration is required. Visit the Outdoor Skills and Stewardship webpage of the Minnesota DNR website for the registration portal, more information about upcoming webinars and recordings of past webinars.
