Population trends of key wildlife species in prairies, wetlands, and forests

The DNR and partner agencies monitor hundreds of species of plants and animals as part of our mission. This information not only helps us learn about those individual species but can also serve as important indicators of habitat health. Ecosystems like prairies, wetlands, and forests are incredibly diverse in type and structure. While a single species cannot serve as an indicator for the entire diversity of types of ecosystems, the following species are examples of important representatives for their habitat types.
