The DNR invites your comments, particularly those regarding planned road/trail designations or closures, environmental or safety issues, potential user conflicts or other site-specific concerns.

Please be as specific as possible in your comments, especially when commenting on unique trail segments.

To comment or ask questions on reclassification proposals or draft plans, call or email the contact person within the specified comment period.

Map guide

Detailed maps show the proposed route designations as forest roads or trails. Some of these maps include the entire state forest and the files may be very large.
Index maps are smaller files with links to detailed township level maps. Township maps offer the same data as the detailed map, but for a smaller area.

Forest classifications and allowed activities

These classifications are current as of the day you view them, and may change at any time.

In state forest land classified as managed:

Highway licensed vehicles allowed on roads/routes unless posted closed.
Off-highway vehicles, defined as All-terrain vehicles/Off-highway motorcycles (ATVs/ORVs/OHMs) are allowed on roads, routes, and on designated trails.
ATV travel off routes, roads, and designated trail is PROHIBITED except when hunter/trapper exception applies.

In state forest land classified as limited:

Highway licensed vehicles are allowed on signed forest roads, unless posted closed.
Off-highway vehicles, defined as All-terrain vehicles/Off-highway motorcycles (ATVs/ORVs/OHMs), MAY OPERATE on signed roads and trails.
ATV travel off of signed motor vehicles trails or forest roads is PROHIBITED except when hunter/trapper exception applies.

In state forest land classified as closed:

Highway licensed vehicles are allowed on forest roads.
Motor vehicles are not permitted off roads.
Off-highway vehicles (ATVs, OHMs, ORVs) are prohibited in this forest.

BWCAW note

This forest is partially located within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. The sections in the BWCAW are always closed to OHV use.
