OHV Trail Detail

Iron Range OHV State Recreation Area West Unit

Iron Range OHV State Recreation Area West Unit

At 2,700 acres, the Expansion Site is over twice the size of the Iron Range Off-Highway Vehicle State Recreation Area, East Unit, also known as just "Gilbert." The core trail winds it's way through upland and wetland natural landscapes with native Minnesota forests and rock ledges. There are picnic areas and overlooks to take a break and enjoy the view. These trails are provided and maintained by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

*Please note some trails are still under development and construction and signed as open or closed to public riding.

Winter use:

A Grant-in-Aid snowmobile trail passes through the West Unit connecting Virginia to the East Range Snowmobile trail system. OHV Trails are not groomed or maintained in the winter. OHV's are not allowed on the groomed snowmobile trail.

The State Recreation Area has reduced staffing hours in the winter. The parking lot is plowed and a portable toilet is available through the winter.
