Snowmobile safety training

In Minnesota, a snowmobile safety certification is required for anyone born after December 31, 1976 to operate a snowmoible on public lands.

Snowmobile safety for 11-15 year olds

There are two options for youth ages 11-15 for snowmobile safety certification.

Minnesota Certified Snowmobile Safety

Snowmobile hybrid class

Students ages 11-15 will first complete the snowmobile on-line course. Then students will attend a snowmobile safety Hybrid class: This includes basic snowmobile operation; protecting the environment; common snowmobile parts and controls; MN rules and laws; responsible snowmobile riding skills for trail riding, and practicing/demonstrating skills on a snowmobile course.

Certification is valid at age 12.

Snowmobile classroom class

Students can attend a classroom-based snowmobile safety class. The 8 hour classroom class consists of a minimum of 2 separate class sessions. Students will learn snowmobile operation; protecting the environment; common snowmobile parts and controls; MN rules and laws; responsible snowmobile riding. They will then practice and demonstrate skills on a snowmobile course.

Certification is valid at age 12.

Snowmobile safety for 16 years of age and older

Students 16 years of age and older can complete snowmobile safety by completing the MN DNR approved online course, which includes a virtual riding course or by attending a classroom class.
