MBS has been recording data on the state's biodiversity since 1987
In 1979, The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources began entering location data for rare plants, rare animals and animal aggregations into the Rare Features Database (a database shared nationally via a program called Biotics). Since its creation in 1987, the Minnesota Biological Survey has greatly accelerated the collection of these records and our knowledge of Minnesota's rare features has increased substantially. There are now over 64,000 records in this database.
