CWD mail-in testing kits

Hunters can request a kit online or, in most instances, visit a local wildlife office to pick one up. Kits are provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

Hunters may also use kits obtained in a previous year.

The kit and testing is free. Test results will be available online.

Kits requested online will be mailed to hunters starting in September. Mailings will continue throughout deer season until the supply runs out. Hunters should expect their kit to arrive within seven days of their online request.

A list of area wildlife offices offering the kits will be available in September.

Hunters in any CWD zone who use this kit to meet the mandatory testing requirement Nov. 9-10 must obtain their kits before hunting. Samples must be postmarked within 72 hours of harvest.

Each kit requires that hunters remove a lymph node sample from a harvested deer. We've created an instructional video so you can successfully extract a sample.

Kits include:

  • Tyvek envelope with prepaid return label
  • Pair of large nitrile gloves
  • Sample collection and submission instructions
  • Datasheet or instructions to submit data online
  • Pre-labeled sample bag
  • Resealable bag
  • Tweezers
  • Freezable cold pack
  • Silver padded mailer
